An inconsistent season for Leylah Fernandez
Leylah Fernandez, the young Canadian tennis player, has had an inconsistent season despite being ranked 26th in the world. Her 2024 record stands at 22-16 (58%), showing a mix of highs and lows. Though she was eliminated in the second round last week in Toronto, she has had some bright moments this year, including reaching the final in Eastbourne and the quarterfinals in Doha early in the season.
Since the French Open, she has been playing some of her best tennis, with a record of 15-6 (71%).
Fernandez pulled off a surprise in Cincinnati
Leylah Fernandez pulled off a surprise at the Cincinnati tournament by defeating the 4th seed, Elena Rybakina. Rybakina, playing her first match since Wimbledon due to several illnesses that had even prevented her from traveling to Paris for the Olympics, initially seemed in control. She was leading 6-3, 6-5, 40-15 on her serve with two match points. However, Fernandez staged a remarkable comeback, saving both match points and forcing a tiebreak, which she won 7-3.
In the final set, Fernandez dominated, not allowing Rybakina any break points and securing a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory. Fernandez will next face Russian and Olympic medalist Diana Shnaider, who is ranked 20th in the world and reached the semifinals in Toronto last week. This will be a significant challenge for Fernandez.
